my son only eats yellow food! no veg no fruit he eats contential cheesy rice, crackers, chicken nuggets well he used to but now picks off the breadcrumbs and eats them, twisties and 2 min noodles and bread
Anna is getting increasingly picky in the foods she eats. She started off as a toddler eating almost anything (even salmon). IT then became mostly dairy (cheese and milk) and carbs. For the past year or so I could give her pasta and puree almost anything in it. Now she isn't eating it. All she wants are bagels, cookies pears and apples. My question is,,, is this just a 3 year old being a 3 year old? or is the rigidness of autism taking over her eating habits. anyone else go throw the same thing?
From my observations, lots of kids are picky eaters. I'm fortunate that mine are good eaters, but I have plenty of friends with very picky kids. From what I've seen on this board, many ASD kids are picky eaters. However, many other kids are as well.
I've also noticed, and this is purely anecdotal, that many people I know that have very picky eating kids admit that they themselves were very picky as children. My dh and his 3 sisters were all very picky as kids, and are still somewhat picky though not as extreme as when they were kids. Between the four of them they have 11 kids, with our 2 being the youngest. Of the 11 kids, I'd say that R & C are among the better eaters and at least 5 of the 11 I'd characterize as very, very picky. I have an 18 year old niece that will only eat fruit salad, turkey sandwiches, and plain chicken breasts for example. To contrast dh family, I ate anything and everything as a kid. Thankfully, the kids seem to be taking after me and not dh's family!
So, I guess the long and the short of it is, with a 3 year old it's hard to tell whether it's an ASD thing or just a 3 year old thing. Do you have a history of picky eating in your family?
Thank you every one for all of your replies. I just have to keep plugging away with Anna trying familar things and not so familar things. I have noticed that her VB drills (receptive vocab) have helped her try a new food here and there. She became familar with the picture card of a taco. One day while my husband and I were eating tacos, Anna came over to me grabbed my taco and took a bite...Needless to say, we have tacos a little more often. Keeping my fingers crossed.IF it is white , my son eats it. Bread, rice, apples (peeled) bananans (on the inside of course white), mashed potato's and french fries.
When I had him on the GFC diet, I really saw no change in him except weight loss and him being cranky. When I took him off the diet, he never wanted milk or yogurt again, rarely ask for bread. He will have a cheese stick everynow and then (white cheese of course). He also doesn't enjoy pasta like he used. which like you said, in your post above, (he could of lived off of just that). Bisquits on the other hand, he will gobble down and hide them so no one else can have them.
I totally have to bribe him on the other things.... "Now just eat atleast 4 green beans." (he hates anything green), "just 5 peices of chicken," (thats easier cause it's white) but he still doesn't like it.
Lets just say he is on lots of supplements and has no problems taken the ones that are
you guessed it....................white
Picky eating is very normal from age 2-5. It's more unusual after age 5, although obviously we all have our preferences. My youngest son is soon 6, and he's still picky, so I know how frustrating this can be.
The following topic on our forum has various online resources for picky eating, including articles that focus on sensory issues.

Good luck with everything!
I was very picky, all the way up till high school, not quite sure why, was afriad to try new things I guess, typically I ate pizza, cookies, ice cream, toast, sndwiches and pasta, I had to be forced to eat other stuff like vegtibles. If it is an ASD thing it may be many years before they grow out of it, if at all.My daughter is very picky also. and she is seven. All she will eat is grilled cheese, mac & cheese, icecream and tomato's. Iam happy to say that her school has an alternative of grilled cheese everyday. Last year I had to bag her lunch daily. Iam also pickt too!
